Etnoentomologia: percepção e uso dos insetos por moradores da comunidade dos Pequis, Pedro II, Piauí, Brasil

Abstract

The class Insecta represents one of the most diverse and abundant animal groups, inhabiting a wide range of environments and establishing multiple interactions with humans. Despite their ecological importance, these organisms are often associated with negative perceptions. This study aimed to investigate the perceptions, classification methods, and uses attributed to insects by members of the rural community of Pequis, located in the municipality of Pedro II, state of Piauí, Brazil. Data collection took place in May 2021 through the application of semi-structured questionnaires to 28 local residents. The data were analyzed using a qualitative and quantitative approach, with the preparation of lists, tables, and figures that organized and synthesized knowledge, perceptions, and numerical information. The orders Diptera and Hymenoptera stood out as the most frequently mentioned by the participants. It was observed that the ethnodomain "insects," as reported by the interviewees, encompassed 14 organisms, including animals that do not belong to the class Insecta. Although the opinions showed some ambivalence, negative perceptions predominated regarding these animals. As for the reported uses, the presence of practices related to popular beliefs and recreational activities was identified, along with references to medicinal and commercial uses of certain species.
