dc.description.abstract The Biologist has a primary role in the dissemination of scientific knowledge, thus contributing to the improvement of society's understanding of the world, especially in matters related to environmental issues. Considering that the educational process is responsible for the systemic transformation of individuals, this research aims to report the role of Biology teachers in stimulating Environmental Education in students in the city of Uruçuí - PI, in order to know if this education promotes understanding and the strengthening of a critical conscience about the environmental problem, as well as if the professors are putting in practice some sustainable project in the society. To this end, a case study was carried out, based on mixed (qualiquantitative) methods, with semi-structured questionnaires being applied to students and teachers from public schools in Uruçuí - PI, thus obtaining records of the research participants in order to contemplate the collected data and expose the phenomenon studied, approaching reality. This work is justified as a way to ascertain the importance of the Biology teacher in the face of the current environmental crisis, considering that Environmental Education needs a continuous learning process, based on respect for all forms of life and on encouraging the participation of students. all aimed at preserving the balance of the environment. As significant results, it was found that students in general have a good theoretical knowledge of Environmental Education and perform daily and routine practices of environmental conservation. However, it was found that a significant percentage of students have not yet participated in any practical environmental project, with a view to sustainability. It is concluded that the students surveyed know environmental issues in theory, but demonstrate deficiencies when it comes to putting theory into practice. dc.description.resumo Na área da Ciência o professor de Biologia tem função primordial na difusão dos conhecimentos científicos, contribuindo assim para a melhoria da compreensão da sociedade sobre o mundo, em especial nas questões inerentes à temática ambiental. Considerando que o processo educacional é responsável pela transformação sistêmica dos indivíduos, esta pesquisa tem como objetivo conhecer as percepções de discentes relacionadas à Educação Ambiental em escolas públicas situadas em Uruçuí - PI, tendo em vista a importância dessa temática como um processo educativo amplo e permanente, necessário à formação do cidadão. Para tal, foi realizado um estudo de caso, embasado em métodos mistos (qualiquantitativos), sendo aplicados questionários com questões abertas e questões abertas para os discentes de escolas públicas Manuel Leal e Arica Leal da cidade de Uruçuí - PI, obtendo assim registros dos participantes da pesquisa de modo a contemplar os dados coletados e expor o fenômeno estudado, aproximando-se da realidade. Como resultados satisfatórios obteve-se que os alunos em geral têm bom conhecimento teórico da Educação Ambiental e realizam práticas cotidianas e rotineiras de conservação ambiental. Entretanto, constatou-se que um percentual bem relevante de discentes ainda não participaram de algum projeto prático ambiental, com vistas à sustentabilidade. Conclui-se que os discentes pesquisados conhecem na teoria as questões ambientais, mas demonstram deficiências quando se trata de colocar a teoria na prática.
