Abstract

This study analyzed the environmental changes in the Integrated Economic Development Region (RIDE) of Greater Teresina, highlighting the importance of sustainable planning for urban units. The research looked at the impact of farming practices and fires on the region's vegetation cover and climate over 20 years. It was observed that there was a change in land cover and land use throughout the study area, i.e., all the municipalities showed some kind of change in any of the classes/indices analyzed, with an emphasis on areas with forest, which gradually decreased from 2002 to 2022. With regard to fires, the month of September showed the highest rates. The municipality most affected was Miguel Leão and the least affected was Lagoa Alegre. The spatio-temporal analysis of the RIDE - Grande Teresina revealed the complexity and challenges faced by the region in terms of environmental management and sustainable development. Over the last 20 years, the advance of farming and cattle-raising and the high incidence of fires have altered the vegetation cover and the environment, causing temperatures to rise, especially in the months of August to November, known in Piauí as the "B-R-O-BRÓ" months. These results highlight the need for public policies that integrate sustainable management practices and technological innovations. These measures are crucial to mitigating negative environmental impacts and promoting development that takes into account the cultural and social diversity of the municipalities.
