Abstract

The seed coat color can be influenced by several factors, from the degree of maturation to its chemical constitution. Pigeon pea seeds Cajanus cajan naturally show variation in tegument color, however, their relationship with physiological potential has not yet been studied. Therefore, in this work the objective was to evaluate the physiological potential of pigeon pea seeds cv. Broad bean, depending on the color of the tegument. For that, two lots (A and B) of commercial seeds were used. The experimental design was completely randomized, with four replications and the treatments were represented by the four colors of the tegument (grey, red, orange and mixed). In each batch, the seeds were manually separated and the seeds were visually classified according to the color of the seed coat into four categories: gray, red, orange and mixed (original batch). Subsequently, determinations of water content and weight of a thousand seeds were carried out and tests of germination, electrical conductivity, emergence in the field were carried out, from which information on the emergence speed index, average emergence time and mass were extracted. dryness of seedlings. Data were submitted to analysis of variance using the F test and comparison of means using Tukey's test (p < 0.05). Seeds with red integument (lot A) and with orange integument (lot B) show greater vigor, indicating that there is a relationship between the color of the integument and the level of vigor.
