Abstract

This article presents the results of research into fundamental arithmetic algorithms and operations. Over the course of 15 years as a mathematics teacher, I was able to clearly observe students' difficulties in understanding content that required one or more of the four fundamental arithmetic operations. This corroborates the emergence of difficulties in learning subsequent content. Given this, there was an interest in searching the literature for works already produced to investigate the importance of algorithms for teaching and learning these operations. This is why the research will seek to deepen bibliographical studies, in order to describe, characterize and evaluate successful practices in teaching these operations, which generated the following question: What are the contributions of algorithms to the teaching and learning of fundamental arithmetic operations? The present study aims to analyze the contributions of algorithms to the teaching and learning of fundamental arithmetic operations. Specifically, the work seeks to describe fundamental arithmetic operations in the context of mathematics; characterize the use of algorithms as a method for optimizing the teaching and learning of fundamental arithmetic operations and evaluate how the use of algorithms contributes to the teaching and learning of fundamental arithmetic operations. The analyzes were carried out with the purpose of obtaining information about the way in which algorithms contribute to the learning of fundamental arithmetic operations in an educational context, with the hypothesis that teaching these operations through the use of algorithms contributes to the meaningful and conceptual learning of these operations.
