Resumo
This research investigates the translation of humor in the dubbing of the American sitcom Modern Family, with a particular focus on phraseological units and the complexities they pose in audiovisual translation. Grounded in Descriptive Translation Studies (Toury, 1995) and informed by the works of Chaume (2012) and Díaz-Cintas and Remael (2007), the study analyzes how humorous instances involving idioms, fixed expressions, and multimodal elements are adapted into Brazilian Portuguese. The analysis considers the interplay of linguistic, cultural, and performative dimensions, emphasizing the role of cultural adaptation, and the technical constraints of dubbing, such as lip-sync and timing. The findings reveal that the effective translation of humor depends on more than linguistic equivalence; it requires a creative and collaborative process involving the translator, dubbing director, and voice actor. By examining the intersection between language, sound, and performance, this research contributes to the understanding of how phraseological and sound-based humor can be successfully recontextualized in dubbed audiovisual products.
