Etnomatemática dos sete patamares da escadaria Da Costa e Silva em Amarante (PI)

Abstract

This article aims to investigate ethnomathematical knowledge as understood through the analysis of the Da Costa e Silva staircase, highlighting its relationship with the mathematical knowledge objects outlined in the National Common Curricular Base (BNCC) in Brazil. Specifically, the following objectives were pursued: to identify reflections and findings in the literature regarding the cultural significance of staircases with seven landings; to understand the cultural significance of the Da Costa e Silva staircase for the people of Amarante (PI); to demonstrate the ethnomathematical knowledge embedded in the staircase and its relationship with the mathematical knowledge objects in the BNCC. To achieve this, the research problem was formulated as follows: What ethnomathematical knowledge can be derived from the analysis of the Da Costa e Silva staircase? This qualitative study involved two main phases. In the first phase, a bibliographic research was conducted on the topic, starting with a search on Google Scholar. In the second phase, field research was carried out, which included measurements of the staircase, photographic documentation, and informal interviews. Ultimately, this research was able to establish the connection between the staircase, ethnomathematics, and the knowledge objects outlined in the BNCC.
