Abstract

This study analyzes the use of the mancala-awalé game as a tool in the Mathematics teachinglearning process, with 1st and 2nd year high school students, at the Benedito Martins Napoleão School, in Barro Duro (PI). The following problem is taken into account: What are the contributions of the mancala game to the teaching and learning of Mathematics? For this, it was defined as a general objective to analyze the benefits of the mancala-awalé game for the teaching-learning of mathematics. The specific objectives consist of: identifying the contributions of the mancala game to the students' teaching-learning process; classify the mathematical knowledge used by students; realize the difficulties encountered during the mancala game; reflect on the importance of using the game as a didactic resource. The present research has a mixed approach and a descriptive type, carried out in three stages: The first consisted of telling the story about the origin of the African game mancala. The second stage corresponded to the application of the rules of the game. The third stage was reserved for the application of a questionnaire with open and closed questions, with 26 students, aged 14 or over, involving men and women. The research revealed that the main benefit or contribution of the mancala game is the development of cognitive and socio-emotional skills, such as logical reasoning, memory, attention, ability to solve mathematical problems related to the thematic unit Numbers, in addition to the playful, technological aspects, African cultural and philosophical aspects present in these games
